Books with a Scottish theme this month dominate The Watermill recommendations.
I have been enjoying watching "A History of Scotland" on the television, and now there is a book to accompany this, and the previous, series. The book is written with Neil Oliver's passion for Scotland and history, showing how we contributed to the story of Britain and the world.
Much closer to home this next recommendation is "Battleground Perthshire". This is a small book written in chronological order from the Roman forts through to prisoner of war camps during the 1st and 2nd World Wars. We certainly live in the quieter corner of Perthshire, but there have been interesting skirmishes and encounters in the area.
Norman McLean may not be a household name; he has been described as the Billy Connolly of the Gaelic world yet is hardly know out with the Highlands and Islands. His biography "The Leper's Bell" tells of the highs and the lows of his long and varies career and with his battle with alcoholism. It is, in turn, tragic and hilarious, moving and uplifting.
Lastly, this will be my Christmas present to myself, "Tales from Highland Perthshire". This is a large volume of Gaelic stories and poems from Highland Perthshire that were collected by Lady Evelyn Stewart Murray in 1891. These stories have been collated into a single volume with the English translations and many notes and explanations of these tales from our own part of Scotland.
Happy reading, and Season's Greetings, for December. Dorothy Procter
