Poetry can be great fun!
What I love about these poems is their playfulness - they really lend themselves to being shared and 'performed', perhaps adding in your own verses by following the same theme and rhyming pattern.
Children love being poets! Poetry can also be really supportive with reading development, with its inherent manageability of condensed text. Children can also be encouraged to 'pull out' and emphasise rhyming vocabulary.
My final comment (teachers are renown for going on for ever) ... Poetry's for life, not just for Christmas! Getting a youngster on board with poetry really is giving them a gift that will stay with them for ever - this book, well produced and illustrated, makes for a great present for children in the 9 - 12 age range.
