The Lie of the Land by Ian Vince (£14.99)
The subtitle: "A spotter's guide to the Britain beneath your feet" sums up this very readable introduction to the forces that have shaped our landscape, be they volcanoes, earthquakes, landslip or coastal erosion.
While covering over 4.5 billion years of geological history, the author also manages to weave in fascinating anecdotes of how the landscape has inspired our culture, from the poetry of Wordsworth to Mendelssohn's musical overture Fingal's Cave.
The book also gives due recognition to Scotland's part in the process - separate from the rest of Britain until about 400 million years ago (Alex Salmond eat your heart out!) - but also producing founding figures of modern geology like James Hutton.

Amazon pays NO UK tax on £3.3bn sales - (Guardian 5/4/12). But it takes government money for its new distribution centre and its lorries use the roads. Its employees will use hospitals, schools and public transport. It's time to boycott these giants who wilfully avoid taxes.
Watermill on STV news 6.15 tonight

The Watermill and Aberfeldy Fairtrade are due to be on STV news at about 6.15 tonight (Monday 27th). STV are doing a piece about Fairtrade Fortnight (27 Feb - 11 March) and 10th anniversary of Aberfeldy as Scotland's first Fairtrade town.
